Become a Wedding Disc Jockey

By: Chris Navi

Qualifications:

If you want to become a wedding disc jockey then you must love music. It is not enough to say that you have music running in your family or that you enjoy music. You have to have a passion for music. Those who think that they can go to a music school and learn to jive with music are badly mistaken. The best wedding disc jockeys are those who have never been to music schools, but have a natural love and passion for music.

The best way to become a wedding disc jockey is to visit as many wedding parties to which you are invited, and see the wedding DJs perform. Then, try and practice at home as many times as possible. You will see your performance improve with every passing day. There will be more spontaneity.

Offer your services to a wedding disc jockey once you feel a little confident about yourself. Become his understudy for at least a year. However, don't try to work like him. That will only bring your career to a quick end. The best wedding disc jockeys are those who are natural, who don't remind you of other performers but delight you with their freshness.

If you want to become a good wedding disc jockey you must observe everything closely. You must see how the DJ reacts with the people. Do people enjoy interacting with him? If yes, then find out what can be the possible reason? You should also notice things like the dress of the DJ. Is it outlandish or suitable for the occasion? What about the music? Is it too loud? Make special note of the way the DJ handles requests. Does he pick the right songs? Does he take too long to decide? All these observations will come in very handy when you yourself become a wedding disc jockey.

Investment:

The minimum equipment that you need to become a wedding disc jockey is turntables, headphones, a mixer and speakers. You need not buy state-of-the art equipment but you surely need to have equipment that will not break down during the course of a four-hour performance. The least that you need to spend on this equipment is $2,000. Of this, turntables alone will cost you $1,500.

Earnings:

The earnings are small when you first become a wedding disc jockey but they start growing once you gain experience and make a name for yourself. You should be happy if you can make $100 on your first performance. But if you are good you can go up to $2,000 for a four-hour DJ session. What's more, there will be a long queue of people waiting to invite you to their wedding party.

Publicity:

Once you are ready to strike on your own place an advertisement in the Yellow Pages. Make sure that you mention clearly that you are a wedding disc jockey. List the equipment that you use so that people realize that you are a professional. You should also place an advertisement in the local newspaper and put up some fliers. Most important, you should build a list of references. Ask your host to give you a testimonial every time you perform. Show these references to potential customers. They are the best ways to generate business. There are close to 15,000 wedding disc jockeys in the US today. Don't become 15,001. If you want to become a wedding disc jockey then you must make sure that your name figures in the top 50, if not the top ten.
