Why do Brides give Wedding Favours?

Wedding favours are a traditional way of thanking your guests for sharing your special day with you. Some sources state that the giving of wedding favours dates back as far as the 16th Century.

Originally, favours were only given by aristocracy and the richer classes. The French used to give out “Bonbonnieres” to their guests whilst the Italians gave “Bomboniere.”

These were well presented crystal or porcelain boxes containing bonbons which - over time - have become sugared almonds. Traditionally, 5 sugared almonds are given to represent the 5 wedding wishes of fertility, health, wealth, longevity and happiness.

Nowadays, there is no end to the choice of wedding favours that are given to wedding guests all over the world. Many brides will still opt for traditional almonds in crystal net bomboniere, whilst others will choose to fill wedding favour boxes with chocolate heart dragees. Equally, many brides would rather give guests a keepsake such as a candle wedding favour, a bath favour or a silver wedding favour.

Favours these days often reflect the theme and time of year of the wedding itself. For example, there is a vast selection of favours produced for brides enjoying an Autumn, Winter, Spring or Summer wedding. Equally, for those who are having a particular colour theme there are plenty of co-ordinating favours that blend brilliantly with chosen colours.

Incidentally, they need not be expensive; it is a common myth that favours are costly. If you budget carefully and choose wisely, favours do not need to break the bank.
